Self Care for the Extremally Busy

In today's fast-paced world, overcoming burnout and achieving peace and happiness while juggling the demands of work, family, and personal life can often feel like an uphill battle. Each week is just as busy and exhausting as the next. Many of us find ourselves stretched thin, struggling to carve out time for self-care and self-love.

At the end of the day, riddled with fatigue and uninspired by the predictable nature of our next day at work - our motivation and energy at all time lows - we resign to cuddling up on the couch watching that ever-so binge worthy TV show because it’s probably the only happiness we have in our lives right now… No one else? Or just me…

But fear not! In this blog, we'll explore the challenges faced by individuals, like you, and offer practical advice on

How to incorporate self-care and self-love practices into your hectic schedule.

Challenges of a busy life

You may be thinking…but Suzie – you just don’t get it. I can’t just make time? Literally every second of my day is booked.

So how can we find an easy way to incorporate mindfulness self-care activities into your daily routine?

Schedule "Me Time": ]Treat self-care appointments with the same importance as work meetings. Block out time on your calendar for activities that rejuvenate you, whether it's a workout, reading, doing your hobby, journaling, yoga, having a crazy dance in the bathroom, savoring a cup of tea or meditation (just to name a few)

Put it in your weekly schedule so that time can’t be taken for anything else. Start off easy, you don’t need to schedule an hour every day. Take 10-30 minutes and block it in 2-3 times a week to start with.

Use your lunch break: you may be thinking… I hardly have time for lunch on my break let alone ‘me time’! Well instead of holding up in the back break room for your lunch, a super easy mental health exercise is to take your lunch outside.

Look up parks around your workplace and take your lunch on a short 5-minute stroll. Take a comfy seat and bring a book, a journal or blast some of your favorite feel-good tunes while soaking ups some sunlight and fresh air. The total disconnect in scenery and sensory environment will give your brain a quick serotonin boost and make you feel like you’ve gone and done something active and fun. Leaving you to feel more focused and fulfilled at the end of the day. Tricking your brain into thinking you’ve had a more productive day because you’ve done two activities instead of just work.

Set Boundaries:
Communicate your need for personal time to your family and colleagues. This is a really challenging thing to do and something I still struggle with! So it might not be first on your list to try. But, setting boundaries can help you balance your responsibilities without feeling overwhelmed. By communicating with others that we need a little space can also help you feel better towards people in your life because not only do you get time to recharge, but it also stops that internal frustration that you might get when people are taking a lot of your time and don’t realise. It’s not necessarily their fault for asking so much of you when you haven’t expressed that it’s a little bit too much for you right now. It’s a tricky thing to do but the better at it you get the more you can feel in control of your life.

Start Small:
You don't need hours of free time to practice self-care. Start with small, manageable activities like a 10-minute mindfulness session or a quick walk during your lunch break. 5-10 minutes is a great starting point and if that’s all you can commit to then really that’s enough. As long as what you do in that 5-10 minute is done with genuine intention, attention and (most importantly) enjoyment.

Prioritize Activities YOU Love:
Self-care shouldn't feel like a chore. Focus on activities that bring you joy and motivation, whether it's painting, cooking, or playing an instrument.

If all you do is your job – you may feel that you have nothing else in your life. And hobbies are an important part of the human experience. We get so dissuaded with all the financial stresses we are feeling right now (being alive is literally so expensive, we know) that you can fall into the trap of: if its not making me money then what’s the point? Which is just not true. Remember you weren’t put on this earth to do work! You’re here to live and experience.

So, if you’re struggling to pick a hobby to do – ask yourself these questions: What do I enjoy? Am I good at it? Do I enjoy it even if I am not good at it? Is it something that interests and inspires my curiosity? If I had financial and time freedom, would I like to try doing this? Does it make me feel relaxed/happy/satisfied? And most importantly – just give it a go!

Break down your goals:
While we may have an picture in our minds what our goals are, it can be sometimes difficult to know what we want but no real, achievable way of getting there. Breaking down our goals and create strong vision map is key to helping you achieve them. When we have a goal in mind, it usually stands to follow that we want that thing because it feels fulfilling to us and will drive some sense of purpose and achievements. It also stands to reason that achieving our goals is something we should enjoy.

Breaking down your big goals into smaller little chunks is a great way to action plan then into reality. And a fantastic way to do that is to set them into your routine in small and enjoyable bursts. Create a routine: It can be a morning routine, or bedtime routine or basically a short set of sequential activities that help you to feel happy and calm. Maybe you’re trying to work on your skin or appearance, creating a 5-10 minute face exercise and skin care routine before bed is a great way to show yourself some love.

It might look something like this:

Step 1 – clean face with my favorite cleanser that smell like roses. Massage in for 1 minute and reflect on three good things that happened today
Step 2 – apply 4 step skincare nighttime routine.
Step 3 – do 5 mins face exercises (gua sha, mask, light therapy, face yoga, lymphatic massage, head massage, hair mask etc)
Step 4 – brush hair and teeth
Step 5 – Get into fresh pajamas/sleepwear.
Step 6 – Say my 3 affirmations in the mirror 3 times. (eg. I am beautiful, my skin is glowing, I feel confident) remember to speak in present tense and really try feel and believe the words you say. Your affirmation could be anything and regarding any area of your life. This is just an example.
